Having reviewed the IRB, what do you need to know to address your Essential Question? Why? What are your Need to Knows and how would you measure them?
I need to know baseline data for all of my students so I can measure growth across the school year. I need to gather possible strategies to use with students who have faced trauma and decide how to measure them. Since trauma effects each person differently I may need to ask families who are willing to share if there has been a distinct difference in students prior to and after facing trauma. This information may also be found in the students' CUM file. There are some components that I still need to decide for my research. Will I focus on math, reading, or writing? Will there be a control group to compare data? I think writing will be a concrete medium for students to show growth. I have already collected several writing samples from my students this school year. But another question is what strategies I be will implementing to engage students. I have to do more digging in order to decide.

My driving question is not related to trauma, but I am taking the same initial steps that you are taking with your research. Have you talked to your school counselor yet? He or she may have some valuable information that will benefit your research.

Thanks for the tip. She would be a good person to ask for information!

I am finding it a little tricky coming up with my driving question, simply because there are so many directions I can go in . Reading your post allowed me to take a moment and remember what are the basic elements of research. Finding that baseline data thinking about the types of students I have ( like what you are doing) will definitely help me get there.

Happy, thank you so much for your feedback. I watched some youtube videos this week about how schools have turned their whole culture around with trauma informed care. Extremely eye opening and inspiring.
